The final match of WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event 2024 saw Cody Rhodes and Kevin Owens tear down the house off the vintage show. Ultimately, The American Nightmare retained the Undisputed WWE Championship following a hard-fought battle that might have put an end to his tensions with The Prize Fighter.
The heated rivalry between the former friends turned foes had been brewing since the aftermath of WWE Bad Blood Premium Live Event when Owens shockingly attacked Rhodes. For weeks, the duo were involved in heated back-and-forth exchanges and brawls leading up to their title match at WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event 2024, which brought back the nostalgia factor and the vintage settings that made it a historic event.
Cody Rhodes & Kevin Owens went head-to-head at WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event 2024
The match itself began with a huge surprise for the audience as Cody Rhodes brought back the iconic Winged Eagle WWE title. This was the gift by Triple H as seen in a promo earlier, for one night only, befitting the retro settings of the show. The opening bell of the contest saw both heated rivals exchange blows and went right at each other, looking to gain the upper hand. Kevin Owens brought his recently returned mean streak and aggression to end his 8-year World Championship.
On the other hand, Cody Rhodes proved his resilience and talent as a top in-ring performer, taking down Owens with every possible move in his artillery. However, an interesting fact to note throughout the match was Cody favouring his ankle, which had not been 100% since his match with Chad Gable on SmackDown last week. Despite that, The American Nightmare fought valiantly against his opponent and delivered an exceptional performance.
The fast-paced action went all over ringside as Rhodes and Owens battled it out at WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event 2024 with the richest prize in sports entertainment on the line. From highly exhilarating moves to multiple near falls, both men displayed an instant classic that led to a huge ovation from the fans.
Just as the match came down to its final moments, both men executed some of their hard-hitting moves, but one of them took out referee Charles Robinson. KO had Cody down, but there was no official to count. A new referee, Eddie Rongo, ran to the ring, but it gave Rhodes enough time to recover and kick out. In a surprising turn, the new official, Eddie was also taken out. Owens tried to take advantage by bringing in a steel chair, but Cody blocked with a Cody Cutter and Cross Rhodes, and Charles Robinson came back on his feet to count the pinfall, giving Rhodes the win.
