Cody Rhodes ascended to the top of the mountain and claimed his destiny by becoming the face of the biggest wrestling promotion in the world this year.
The American Nightmare made history when he dethroned Roman Reigns to become the Undisputed WWE Champion in the main event of WrestleMania 40 to a massive roar from the live crowd. However, The American Nightmare’s journey led to that moment, full of struggles and pain, including a devastating torn pectoral muscle injury that Rhodes suffered in his Hell in a Cell match against Seth Rollins in 2022.
What happened when Cody Rhodes suffered a torn pectoral muscle injury?
The current Undisputed WWE Champion was a special guest on the current WWE United States Champion and social media sensation Logan Paul’s popular podcast, ‘ImPAULsive‘, where Rhodes detailed how exactly he tore his pectoral muscle.
While discussing the pectoral muscle injury he suffered while preparing for his Hell in a Cell match against Seth Rollins, Cody Rhodes revealed that he had little to no warm-up in the gym and immediately put 295lbs on the bench. The American Nightmare said he was pushing himself there because there was only one more guy in the gym, and he got competitive. Rhodes said he went to do the bench press and immediately tore his pectoral muscle when he felt something pop off in his chest and he did not even need to kick the weight off, it flew off.
” I felt bullet proof in the gym, Walked in the gym with flip-flops on. Flip Flops in the gym? Bad sign. Open cup of coffee. Little bit of this real old-timer warmup,” Cody says while swinging his arms back and forth. “Got on the bench and put on 295, didn’t even warm up. There’s no reason for me to ever be doing it –- I was going for it. It’s just me and him in there. I was like, ‘I’m going to show you, dude.’ I just unrack it and it went right away. Just went. Hadn’t even gone down, it went like velcro. They were like, ‘Did it pop?’ It doesn’t pop. It went, and I felt it. Full tear. I didn’t need to kick the weights off, they flew off.”

It was funny enough that the guy with whom Rhodes was competing came to his assistance when The American Nightmare suffered an injury. Despite such a terrible injury, The Prodigal Son produced a spectacular bout against Seth Rollins and headlined the show. Cody would then be sidelined for months due to his injury and made his sensational return by winning the Men’s Royal Rumble Match in 2023, and the rest, they say, is history.
