In a shocking turn of events, All Elite Wrestling and New Japan Pro Wrestling recently announced their joined pay-per-view together ‘The Forbidden Door’ on June 26 at the United Center in Chicago, Illinois. The PPV sold out within days and can be seen as the next big revolution brought in by two major wrestling promotions.
While AEW & NJPW have taken a huge step towards the evolution of Pro Wrestling in today’s generation, WWE seems to be absent from this conversation as of now. Vince McMahon’s wrestling giant has also opened the forbidden door on some occasions like having AEW’s Chris Jericho appear on Stone Cold Steve Austin’s Broken Skull sessions on the WWE network or IMPACT’s then Knockouts champion Mickie James wrestling in the 2022 Women’s Royal Rumble.
Looking at these past instances, it can be said that WWE would be open to crossing the Forbidden Door in full force in the future with their arch-rival AEW and wrestling fans could witness some of the biggest blockbuster matches of all time.

Brash, Cocky, and arrogance are three words that run in common between WWE’s Miz and AEW’s Maxwell Jacob Friedman aka MJF. There have been several comparisons made between these two top-tier talents from their excellent heel persona, exceptionally well promo delivery, and sheer arrogance running through their veins that come out in their overall demeanor. Be it MJF being referred to as a less famous Miz or The Awesome One compared to the young athlete, The Forbidden Door could become the catalyst for a clash between two of the best heel workers of all time.

The Master of the 619 Rey Mysterio has been considered perhaps one of the greatest luchadors to ever step foot inside the squared circle. Many aspiring masked superstars have wanted to follow in the same footsteps of success as WWE’s biggest little man. One such luchador who considers Mysterio as his idol and a big influence on his career is AEW superstar Rey Fenix who shot to fame in Lucha Underground promotion and also shared the same space as the legendary Rey Mysterion in the same promotion during its third season. AEW Producer Dean Malenko compared Fenix with Mysterio describing him to be as blessed with the rare gift of high flying body motions and techniques as Rey. With the presence of the Forbidden Door now prevalent, Fenix could fulfill perhaps a dream of battling his idol inside a wrestling ring in an explosive match filled with high-flying wrestling action.

If there is any forbidden match that is a combination of history, background, storytelling, and the ability to deliver a 5-star classic wrestling match, it is definitely between WWE’s Edge and AEW’s Christian Cage. The two best friends from Toronto, Canada have grown up loving the sport of wrestling, made a name for themselves as a part of one of the greatest tag teams of all time, and achieved immense success as singles competitors as well. Both Superstars who retired unexpectedly at the prime of their careers came back from career-threatening injuries to re-establish themselves as a mainstay in the business. While Edge terrorizes WWE today as the leader of the demonic faction ‘Judgement Day’ alongside Damien Priest and Rhea Ripley, Captain Charisma decided to switch sides after a one-off appearance at the 2021 Royal Rumble match with an intention of rejuvenating himself and starting the second phase of his career in the elite landscape and has become a main event star in AEW. With the former Rated-R Superstar and Champion of the Peeps on opposite sides, the opening of the Forbidden Door could give a new definition to this high-profile main event blockbuster match between Edge and Christian.

A wrestling dream match that would be nothing sort of an instant classic would be between the Best in the World CM Punk and the Drip God Seth Rollins. Seth’s early beginnings in the WWE saw him act as an enforcer to Punk alongside Roman Reigns and Dean Ambrose as a part of The Shield protecting then WWE Champion and keeping his title safe. Even before Punk’s abrupt departure from the company in 2014, he squared off with the Undisputed Future of WWE in a singles bout while Rollins was still coming up the ranks of becoming a top superstar. Punk’s shocking appearance at WWE’s Backstage show on Fox in 2019 as an analyst sent shockwaves and triggered Seth Rollins to make it clear that he wants to face the Voice of the Voiceless inside the squared circle. However Punk dodged his challenge and quietly left this association as the show was canceled. Fast-forward to 2022, CM Punk came back to the wrestling world as an in-ring competitor joining rival promotion AEW, and Rollins transitioned into a main event attraction for the WWE. With so much history and personal animosity between these two superstars, a walk through the forbidden door could finally see this WWE vs AEW Dream match finally come to fruition.

The two superstars who ruled the fort over their respective companies colliding in a one-on-one encounter in the wrestling ring would be sensational across the entire wrestling world. A dream match of that magnitude could be potentially between The Tribal Chief Roman Reigns- The #1 Guy in the WWE and Kenny Omega- The #1 Guy in any promotion he wrestled for and one of the pioneers for putting AEW on the map. The Head of the Table Roman Reigns has been unstoppable and perhaps one of the biggest attractions of this generation ever since he underwent a character change in 2020 reigning as the Universal Champion for 600+ days (as of this reading) and also becoming WWE’s Undisputed Champion at Wrestlemania 38 defeating Brock Lesnar in a Champion vs Champion Winner take All match. Kenny Omega on the other hand went to conquer every other promotion in the world, reigning as the world champion for three promotions at the same time, and has always been credited for his excellent in-ring acumen and technical ability etching his name in the history books as one of the best wrestlers in the world. Even Omega and Reigns have also expressed their desire during multiple interviews to face other one day inside the squared circle. Two Superstars who have reigned supreme over others in their respective worlds could stand across the ring one day with the existence of the Forbidden Door to give one of the greatest matches of all time in the history of the business.
